The academic staff member of the Scieific and Industrial Research Organization of Iran announced the end of the postdoctoral project “Analysis and investigation of the dynamic Stirling engine”; A low-cost engine without conveional moving parts and with an efficiency of 30-35% that can provide electricity and heat on a small scale, even in remote areas and space and military applications.
According to RCO News Agency, “Analysis and investigation of a dynamic Stirling engine using soft computing methods and disturbances” is the title of Shahriar Zare’s postdoctoral project, which was completed under the guidance of Fethullah Pourfiaz and with the support of the National Science Foundation of Iran.
Shahriar Zare, a faculty member of the Mechanics Departme of the Iranian Scieific and Industrial Research Organization, explained about this project: We have two types of Stirling engines, which are called kinematic and dynamic engines.
He coinued: Kinematic engines are divided io three parts: Alpha, Beta and Gamma, which are old Stirling engines and are 150 years old.
Zare added: Stirling kinematic type engines have a crankshaft, connecting rod and flywheel, and in terms of manufacturing process and cost, they are the same as other engines. But in the dynamic type of Stirling engines, the crankshaft, connecting rod and pistons are removed, which greatly reduces the cost of manufacturing, friction and the manufacturing process; Instead, increase efficiency. On the other hand, these types of engines do not require basic maienance for years, and at the same time, the engine’s lifespan is also improved.
Zare added: This feature has made it challenging to set up dynamic Stirling engines due to the removal of the crankshaft, connecting rod and flywheel in their structure. Because in the new dynamic Stirling engine, the engine becomes an oscillator, so it is extremely difficult and challenging to start.
He stated: To build this type of engine, acoustic sciences, solid mechanics and electrical corol should be used and he was proficie in these sciences to be able to build this type of engine or the same generator.
The academic staff member of the Mechanics Departme of the Scieific and Industrial Research Organization of Iran said: In other words, it is very difficult to build an engine with ierdisciplinary science, because it is possible that this type of engine will be built and not work at the last mome; Therefore, the risk of building it is very high and we got this engine after 8 times of building; Therefore, we have now become the third coury that has achieved this knowledge.
According to this researcher, the Stirling thermoacoustic engine was built for the first time at the Las Alamos organization, a subsidiary of NASA, in 2000 and was published in the most prestigious magazines in the world. China is the second coury that has achieved this knowledge.
About the applications of this type of engine, Zare said: The first goal of building and evaluating this type of engine is to use it to fuel spaceships with nuclear fuel. Spacecrafts need electricity generation and storage.
He added: This engine can replace the supply of electricity and heat from solar panels. This type of motor connects the heat source to the main source of the motor by means of a heat dish that is heated by the focal sun, and that motor is started and produces electricity.
According to Zare, this engine can work with any heat source, which is very good and practical in the absence of electricity and can provide electricity without the need for a power pla; Therefore, this engine is also called “small power pla”.
A faculty member of the Mechanics Departme of the Iranian Scieific and Industrial Research Organization stated: Solar panels require a lot of space, and on the other hand, these panels in the best condition (generation 5) are 18-19%, which will decrease to 5% after 5 years. But this built engine requires very little space and its efficiency is 30-35% in the laboratory space.
He said: its electricity and heat supply is very high compared to solar panels, on the other hand, its installation cost is much lower than solar panels. It does not require maienance and is efficie for several years.
Zare stated: If this engine is industrialized with support, we can say that we are the first coury that has industrialized this model (of course, if NASA has also industrialized it, it has not published information about it yet) so that you can produce electricity and heat with this generator in an apartme complex by placing it on the roof and adding a dish using solar energy.
Stating that this type of engine has military applications, he said: This engine can be used in defenses and missile sites.
Zare said that the electricity of the sites is usually supplied with a battery, which after a while, the battery also gets damaged and this part is very expensive, and said: therefore, the cost of this type of equipme is very high.
According to the scieific member of the Mechanics Departme of the Iranian Scieific and Industrial Research Organization, with the industrialization of this engine, both electricity and heat can be produced in remote places.
He poied out: Of course, 7 steps are needed for industrialization, and if this happens and we are supported by risky investme, we can be the exporter of this type of engine.
According to Iran’s National Science Foundation (INSF), Zare said in the end: 7 stages must be phased to reach the industrial stage, and if it becomes industrialized and we are the first coury, it is possible to export it. Many couries need electricity produced from sunlight; Therefore, this engine can be exported to the world.
