The European Commission on Friday fined X Media Company 120 million euros (nearly $140 million) for multiple violations of the EU’s digital services law, the first non-compliance decision under the landmark law.
According to the commission’s report, Company X misled users by “deceptively designing” its blue tick feature, failed to comply with transparency requiremes for its advertising, and blocked researchers’ access to public data.
The commission found that the blue X mark system, where users can pay for “approved” status, misrepreses approval.
