Advisor Mogherini: Europe is alone against Trump and Russia
The leading European analyst has warned that Europe is practically alone in the issue of security and war in Ukraine and is now facing two simultaneous challenges: Russia in the East and Trump’s America in the West.
According to RCO News Agency, “Natalie Tucci”, the special advisor of Federica Mogherini, the former head of EU foreign policy, has pointed out in a note that Europe has recently realized the fact that it is alone in defending its security interests.
In this note published in the American publication “Politico”, Tucci emphasizes that the Europeans had convinced themselves that “Donald Trump,” the president of the United States, is an unpredictable but ultimately manageable person; An idea that today Europe has found to be wrong.
He explains that from the speech of “J. D. U.S. Vice President Vance at the Munich Security Conference to the new “national security strategy” of the United States, the Trump administration has always had a clear and consistent view of Europe; A view that prioritizes Washington’s closer relationship with Moscow and seeks to “divide and weaken” Europe. Tucci writes that this strategy is going forward by relying on nationalist and far-right forces in Europe; Forces that now have the support of Washington and Moscow.
The author, who is the director of the Italian Institute of International Affairs and a professor at the “Transnational Governance” Institute of the European University, emphasizes that Europe must accept an unpleasant truth: in the matter of security and the war between Russia and Ukraine, Europe is “at best alone” and “at worst” facing 2 enemies: Russia in the East and Trump’s America in the West.
Politico notes that European leaders have repeatedly reacted to Trump’s verbal attacks or his administration’s pressure with a smile and softness, and they think that this behavior can bring Trump back to the path of transatlantic cooperation. But according to Tucci, this method has never worked.
Humiliating treatment of Trump and his deputy with Zelensky in the White House
He points out that every time Trump has addressed the issue of Ukraine, he has clearly sided with Russia; From the trap he laid in the White House for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, to the official and glamorous trip of Vladimir Putin to Alaska, as well as the 28-point peace plan, which according to Politico was probably written in Moscow. In all these cases, Europe paid the price and tried to maintain the relationship with America.
Tucci writes in his analysis that the reason for the continuation of this situation is that Europe has a wrong perception of Trump’s intentions. The Trump administration has made it abundantly clear that it wants the war in Ukraine to end quickly, not to help Ukraine, but to pave the way for the normalization of US relations with Russia and to facilitate economic deals between Trump’s inner circle and circles close to the Kremlin. Politico explains that Trump has abandoned the liberal global order and turned the world into a realm of “survival of the fittest” and “imperialist deals.”
This note also points out that the American strategy is completely aligned with the ideological priorities of the European far-right movements. These groups, which have nationalist and conservative views, are trying to weaken the European Union from within, and some right-wing parties are actually playing the role of a “useful tool” for them. The article emphasizes that in the American national security document, the only possible type of transatlantic relationship is a relationship in which the European far-right forces are under the leadership of “top Americans”.
Tucci warns that if Trump has not yet been able to fully bring Europe under his command, it is not because of the Europeans’ skill at politics, but because “Putin is not yet ready for the full deal.” Relying on this situation, according to him, cannot be the security strategy of Europe.

Trump and Putin meeting in Alaska
In the following, Tucci pointed to Europe’s options in the current situation and wrote that the “good News” is that the key European countries (from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom to Poland, the Nordic countries, the Baltics, the Netherlands, Spain, and even Italy) have understood well that the path to European security “passes through Kiev.” They know that Russia’s war with Ukraine is an imperialist project that starts in Ukraine but will not stop there.
Mogherini’s adviser notes that Europe has considerable leverage in the war. With US support cut off, it is Europe that freezes Russian assets, imposes major sanctions, finances Ukraine’s economy and provides the bulk of military aid. It is also a part of Ukraine’s defense due to the investment of Europeans in the domestic production of Ukraine.
However, the article acknowledges that America still plays a vital role in the field of intelligence and weapons provision; A matter that increases Europe’s dependence on Washington and America uses this dependence as a political tool.
In the end, Tucci writes that the lack of two elements of “strategic focus” and “political courage” is the main obstacle in Europe’s path. He suggests that European leaders should clearly tell Trump that Europe can manage the war in Ukraine, it is enough for America to continue the flow of information and arms sales. Europe cannot guarantee immediate peace, but it can build the foundations of its stable security and, if necessary, give Trump a statue, a square or a golden badge after the war!
