President of the European Commission: confiscation of Russian property is a vital measure for the defense of Europe
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday that confiscating Russian assets to compensate Ukraine is a vital step for Europe’s defense.
According to RCO News Agency, Von Derlein explained that this issue is related to the same “compensation loan” – a scheme that the European Commission plans to use to seize and use the blocked assets of Russia.
Von Derlein added: “This proposal works on the basis of cash from the blocked assets of Russia. These funds will be used to pay compensation.”
Earlier, von Derlein said that the European Union would speed up the process of using frozen assets of the Russian government to back a 140 billion euro loan to Ukraine.
The European plan to use the assets of the Russian government to support the granting of a loan to Ukraine was strongly opposed by the Belgian Prime Minister at the European Union meeting last month; The country where these assets are held.
“I can’t imagine any scenario in which only European taxpayers pay,” von Derlein stressed.
