The historical village of Azghod, which is also known by the old name “Zeqi” which means narrow valley and full of water, is located in the pleasa slopes of Binalud and about 25 kilometers west of Mashhad. This summer village with mouain views, green gardens and an old settleme is considered one of the oldest villages in Targahba region. Various evidences show that the history of settleme in this area goes back to several thousand years ago, and the existence of tombstones with ancie lines and historical monumes confirms the longevity of this settleme.
Azghod Jame Mosque is the most importa historical work of the village; A valuable building whose construction is attributed to the period of Timurid Shahrukh and was recorded in the year 834 AH. The ierior of the mosque has a unique effect with twelve wooden columns resting on stone bases, and its porch is decorated with marble inscriptions from the period of Fath Ali Shah. The exquisite wooden door of the mosque, with original inlays and delicate knotting, is considered one of the most promine examples of Iranian wood art.
In addition to the historical architecture, Ozghed has an autheic and completely native face due to its stepped structure and houses built with stone, wood and mud. The location of the village in the middle of a narrow and water-filled valley has caused the name “Zagh” (meaning narrow valley) to be attributed to it in the local dialect and gradually become “Azghod”.
Next to the mosque, two old sycamore trees stand out with huge and ceuries-old trunks; According to the resides, the trees are more than a thousand years old and in a way, they are considered the historical symbol of the village. Old cemeteries, hiking trails such as Zeghidara and Kamindara, and the rich cultural background of the village people have made Azghod an attractive destination for nature lovers, history buffs, and discerning tourists.
