The historical village of Azghod, which is also known by the old name “Zeqi” which means narrow valley and full of water, is located in the pleasant slopes of Binalud and about 25 kilometers west of Mashhad. This summer village with mountain views, green gardens and an old settlement is considered one of the oldest villages in Targahba region. Various evidences show that the history of settlement in this area goes back to several thousand years ago, and the existence of tombstones with ancient lines and historical monuments confirms the longevity of this settlement.
Azghod Jame Mosque is the most important historical work of the village; A valuable building whose construction is attributed to the period of Timurid Shahrukh and was recorded in the year 834 AH. The interior of the mosque has a unique effect with twelve wooden columns resting on stone bases, and its porch is decorated with marble inscriptions from the period of Fath Ali Shah. The exquisite wooden door of the mosque, with original inlays and delicate knotting, is considered one of the most prominent examples of Iranian wood art.
In addition to the historical architecture, Ozghed has an authentic and completely native face due to its stepped structure and houses built with stone, wood and mud. The location of the village in the middle of a narrow and water-filled valley has caused the name “Zagh” (meaning narrow valley) to be attributed to it in the local dialect and gradually become “Azghod”.
Next to the mosque, two old sycamore trees stand out with huge and centuries-old trunks; According to the residents, the trees are more than a thousand years old and in a way, they are considered the historical symbol of the village. Old cemeteries, hiking trails such as Zeghidara and Kamindara, and the rich cultural background of the village people have made Azghod an attractive destination for nature lovers, history buffs, and discerning tourists.
