Sweden cuts aid to five couries to boost support for Ukraine
The Swedish governme announced on Friday that it will phase out aid for the developme of the five couries of Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Mozambique, Liberia and Bolivia over the coming years, and allocate its financial resources to increase support for Ukraine.
According to RCO News Agency, “Benjamin Dossa”, the Minister of Iernational Developme Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Sweden, said that Ukraine is “the most importa priority of Sweden’s foreign policy and aid policy” and that is why the governme plans to increase its aid to Ukraine to at least 10 billion kroner (about 1.06 billion dollars) in 2026.
He added: “For foreign aid, there is no secret priing press to pri money; This money must come from somewhere.”
The Swedish governme announced that the decision would free up more than 2 billion kroner over the next two years, which could be directed to Ukraine for projects such as rebuilding the coury’s energy infrastructure.
Sweden has also cut aid to more than 10 couries, including Burkina Faso and Mali, since the curre governme took office in 2022.
Sweden is one of the main donors of humanitarian aid in the world and has had an annual budget of 56 billion kroner in the last three years. The governme has announced that it will reduce this amou to 53 billion kroner per year for the period of 2026-2028 and will reallocate part of the expenses for immigration and repatriation.
