Putin: Russia does not agree with parts of the US plan to end the war in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow disagrees with some parts of the US plan on how to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
According to Isna, Putin said on Wednesday regarding the US plan for peace in Ukraine: “Sometimes we said yes, we can discuss this issue, but we cannot agree on some things.”
Putin did not mention the differences between the two sides. There are still differences, at least in relation to two main issues: the fate of the Ukrainian regions occupied by Russian forces and security guarantees for Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump’s representative Steve Witkoff, who headed the US delegation at Tuesday’s talks with Russia, is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian negotiators in Florida.
Trump said the talks had been “relatively good,” adding that it was too early to predict the outcome because “it’s up to both sides.”
In this interview, which was conducted before his official visit to Delhi, Putin emphasized that Moscow had not seen the revised version of the US peace plan before the almost five-hour conversation with Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
He said: “That’s why it was necessary to review all clauses from the beginning and that’s why the negotiations took so long.”
He once again emphasized that the Ukrainian forces should withdraw from the Donbas region in the east of the country – even from the parts that are still under their control. Currently, Russian forces control about 85% of Donbass.
“Either we take back these areas by force, or eventually the Ukrainian forces will withdraw,” Putin said.
Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov said earlier that the Kremlin talks did not bring “any compromise” to end the war.
Ushakov also noted that Russia’s negotiating position has been strengthened by what Moscow calls “recent victories on the battlefield.”
