In the hot and humid regions of the Amazon, where sweltering heat and sudden downpours are a daily occurrence, waiting for a bus can often become a difficult and exhausting experience. It was this situation that led Fernando Andrade to a different approach when designing the “Amazon Bus Station” in the city of Belém; An approach that was based not on the architectural display, but on hearing the voices of the people who were supposed to use this space every day. The 16-meter structure of the Amazon Bus Station, which was completed in February 2024, places passengers in a protective cover of triangular steel and reflective glass; A shell with organic curves that creates a calm, safe and open space inside.
The entire structure is made of repeating triangular units; A geometric system that accurately distributes forces throughout the surface. This clever engineering has made the 16-meter span of the station to be based on only four pillars. The result is minimum intervention on the ground level and maximum freedom of urban movement.
One of the important points of the project is the full use of recycled steel; A decision that has resulted in a 70% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional construction methods. The importance of this success is that the design and construction model of this station can be repeated and expanded.

The laminated glass of this station blocks 99.8% of direct sunlight; A feature that in tropical climate is not an added bonus, but the determining factor is that the space does not turn into a hot greenhouse.
The cleverest part of the design is the ventilation blades on the eaves that direct warm air out and keep the rain out. This system is actually a natural ventilation without any moving parts or energy consumption, which only requires periodic cleaning; Because it doesn’t have any current energy costs, it doesn’t have an engine that breaks down, and it doesn’t have any electronic parts that get damaged in humidity.
