The European Union is concerned about more pressure from the United States on Ukraine to score points
The European Union’s foreign policy chief says US-Russia talks may increase pressure on Kiev to make concessions.
According to RCO News Agency, “Kaya Callas”, the head of the foreign policy of the European Union, is worried that the talks between “Vladimir Putin”, the president of Russia, and “Steve Witkoff”, the special envoy of Donald Trump, will increase the pressure on Ukraine to make concessions.
Witkoff, a real estate consultant who was recently named the US envoy, arrives in Moscow today after leading an American delegation in talks with Ukraine in recent days.
Kalas said about the upcoming meeting between Witkoff and Putin: “I am afraid that all the pressure will be on the victim, that is, Ukraine will have to make concessions and commitments.” While in order to have peace, we should not lose our focus that in fact Russia started this war and Russia continues this war and it is Russia that is really targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure every day to cause as much damage as possible.”
In this regard, the Guardian newspaper wrote: European leaders are alarmed by the US plan presented last month to end the war, which they suspect strongly favors Russia. The plan included giving Moscow territory in eastern Ukraine it did not yet control, while asking Kiev to limit the size of its military and abandon its desire to join NATO. While that plan has since changed, Ukraine’s European allies remain wary of any plan that would stabilize forced border changes while, they say, “not punishing war crimes.”
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Russia should not be rewarded for its aggression, in a diplomatic bid to win the support of European allies. “We also have to make sure that Russia itself does not understand what it can consider as a reward for this war,” he said at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Ukrainian leader made phone calls with dozens of other leaders, including British Prime Minister Kerr Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Mertes.
Zelenskiy said the talks with the French president lasted several hours and focused on negotiations to end the war and security guarantees. “Peace must become truly sustainable,” he wrote in X. The war must end as soon as possible.”
The two men from Paris also spoke with Witkoff and Rostam Amrov, head of the Ukrainian delegation to the US negotiations, and Ukraine’s defense minister.
Meanwhile, Kaya Callas, who said efforts to end the war in Ukraine could enter a “decisive week”, warned that allowing Russia to change borders by force would set a dangerous precedent for the whole world.
Earlier in the day, he described recent talks in Florida between the United States and Ukraine as “difficult but productive.” Asked if he trusted the United States to find a good solution for Ukraine, he said: “Ukrainians are alone. “If they are with the Europeans, they will definitely be much stronger, but I trust the Ukrainians to defend themselves.”
Wittkoff is expected to travel to Russia with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Putin’s spokesman did not specify whether Kushner, who played an active role in negotiating the Gaza peace deal, would also attend the meeting with the Russian president.
The flurry of diplomatic activity comes as a study showed Russia made its biggest advance in Ukraine in a year in November, according to an AFP analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War. The Russian army captured 701 square kilometers, the second largest territorial advance of the war after November 2024.
