The police of the Republic of Azerbaijan raided the house of opposition figure Aliyev
The police of the Republic of Azerbaijan searched the house of the leader of one of the main opposition parties in Azerbaijan in the midst of extensive investigations into a “suspected coup” to oust the president of this country.
According to Isna, this action against Ali Karimli, who has been the leader of the People’s Front Party of Azerbaijan since 2000 and is known as an opponent of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, is related to an ongoing criminal case against Ramiz Mehdiyev, an old ally of the former president of this country, Heydar Aliyev, who was the leader of Azerbaijan until shortly before his death in 2003.
Karimli’s deputy Seymour Hazi told Reuters News agency that two members of the aforementioned party, Faiq Amirli and Mohammad Ibrahim, were arrested on Saturday.
The State Security Service of Azerbaijan has not yet commented on this investigation.
Officials believe Karimli is being financed by Mehdiyev, who joined Heydar Aliyev’s government as chief of staff in the early years of his tenure in 1994, a government source told Reuters.
Elham Aliyev, Heydar’s son, fired Mehdiyev in 2019, a move seen at the time as an attempt to oust officials appointed during his father’s tenure.
Last month, a court in Baku sentenced the 87-year-old Mehdif to four months of house arrest after accusing him of crimes including trying to seize power.
