Earlier, traces of opium were found in a few containers in a cemetery in Sedment, south of Cairo, which was dedicated to the burial of the poor. This evidence shows that this substance was consumed in ancient Egypt both among the common people and among the elite.

Based on samples of organic remains obtained from the Yale Babylonian Collection and the Penn Museum, there is now sufficient evidence that at least some types of Egyptian alabaster vessels were directly linked to the storage, preparation, and consumption of opium; which is beyond more general use. This reflects a broader horizon of apothecary traditions in the ancient world that is still poorly understood.

Egyptian alabaster vessels have now been identified with clear chemical signatures of opium both in elite societies outside Egypt (such as Mesopotamia) and in more common cultural contexts within Egypt (such as sediment); The findings refute long-standing speculation that they functioned as cosmetic containers or private message carriers that had persisted for more than a century. They may even have been metaphorical symbols of a distinct cultural tradition; Examples of overt “branding” in the modern sense, i.e. types of containers that immediately evoked the use of opium in a centuries-old tradition.
