The Pentagon is not sure of the identity of the people on the boats targeted off the coast of Venezuela
The New York Times reported, quoting informed sources, that the US military does not have accurate information on the identity of the people on the boats it is targeting in its anti-narcotics operations off the coast of Venezuela.
According to Isna, this newspaper also wrote: “Based on information obtained from people familiar with secret military findings, the US military only knows that the people on these boats are connected to drug cartels and has some confidence that drugs are on these boats.”
The New York Times also wrote: “In general, when the US military attacks these boats, it does not know exactly who will be killed in these attacks. In other words, it does not have accurate information about the identity of the passengers of these boats that are attacked on the coast of Venezuela.
The newspaper notes that since the start of the campaign against drug traffickers in September, US forces have killed more than 80 people in their attacks on these alleged drug-carrying boats.
The New York Times also emphasizes that “the targets of these attacks were not the top leaders of the drug cartels and, at best, the military targeted lower-ranking people who were involved in drug trafficking limited to moving cocaine from one place to another.”
In the continuation of this article, it is also stated: “In the worst possible case, the American army killed people in its attacks who may have been fishermen, immigrants or even people who had nothing to do with drug trafficking.”
Washington has accused the Venezuelan authorities of failing to deal with drug trafficking.
The US Navy deployed a task force led by the aircraft carrier “Gerald Ford”, a nuclear submarine and more than 1,600 personnel in the Caribbean Sea.
Since September, US forces have sunk at least 20 speedboats in the region, killing more than 80 people.
US President Donald Trump has authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela.
American media have also repeatedly reported that the United States may soon target sites inside Venezuela.
