The world of wildlife is brutal, amazing and poetic at the same time, and the “European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2025 Awards” depict exactly this beautiful contrast. This annual competition, organized by the German Society for Nature Photography (GDT), is one of the most prestigious nature photography events in the world and every year, it offers a fresh perspective on the wild life of our planet; A life that fluctuates between survival and destruction, love and sorrow.
This year’s winner, Luca Lorenz, a 20-year-old self-taught German photographer, wowed the judges with a profound black-and-white image called “Silent Despair.” In this photo, the European male owl is standing in the middle of the night with a mouse in its claws; The food that was supposed to be for his missing chickens. A bitter but poetic account of a lonely father who still calls his children after being hunted.
Along with Lorenz’s work, other winners have also depicted the world of animals from new and human angles; From hunting arctic foxes in the snow to tender moments between elephants and their offspring, in every frame flows not just technical skill, but empathy and respect for life. (mymodernmet)
