The mayor of Tbilisi accused the European Union of plotting a coup in Georgia
The mayor of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, announced that EU officials, who publicly consider themselves friends of Georgia, are actually working to destabilize the country.
According to RCO News Agency, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze also said that some European Union officials have hostile and deceitful policies towards Georgia while pretending to promote democracy.
According to Rashatodi News channel, the mayor of Tbilisi continued: “They have repeatedly tried to organize a revolution, a coup and overthrow the government of Tbilisi. They tell us that they are friends of Georgia, but they incite coups, extremism and violence. This is not friendship or partnership.”
He added that Tbilisi only wants a “fair attitude towards Georgia, respect for the people, the constitution and our independence” from Brussels.
Last month, the former soccer star won a new term in municipal elections that opposition forces claimed were rigged. The claims sparked widespread protests, where pro-Western demonstrators clashed with police and attempted to storm the presidential palace in the capital after the vote.
Opposition activists have been trying for months to hold elections under Western supervision through a campaign of street protests that have sometimes been violent.
“Irakli Kobakhidze”, the prime minister of Georgia, considered these protests and unrest to be part of the fifth coup supported by the West in the last four years in this country.
Tbilisi also chastises the European Union for refusing to adopt policies aligned with Brussels, particularly siding with Kiev, which officials say would have been disastrous for Georgia.
Georgia became a candidate for membership in the European Union in 2023, along with Ukraine and Moldova, but unlike the other two countries, accession negotiations have been practically stopped by Brussels.
