to report news agency Mehr quoted from Amirkabir University of Technology, Mehdi Saeed Kiast, referring to the goals of the standardization conference in industries Mariya said: The purpose of the conference is to exchange new scieific materials between activists in the sea domain; Both at the research level and at the industrial level. This exchange can take place from the industry to the university or vice versa and strengthen the ieraction between these two sectors.
He stated that a series of maritime institutions of the coury are participating in this eve, and added: In this conference, all institutions related to the sea domain, including governme organizations, industrial complexes and universities of the coury, have been invited to participate in various sections, including preseing articles, holding workshops and keynote speeches. In this way, a wide range of academic and industrial activists will be involved in the conference.
The head of the marine engineering faculty of Amirkabir University of Technology emphasized: the daily exchange of scieific information between academic and industrial professors, specialists and researchers can play an importa role in the advanceme of standardization, the developme of local standards and their application in the industry.
In response to a question about Iran’s position in the field of developing iernational standards, Kiast said: The developme of standards is mainly done in developed couries, and developing couries are the consumers of these standards. In our coury, in addition to using iernational standards, the duty of universities and scieific ceers is to move towards the developme of national standards based on local conditions.
He coinued: Some iernational standards that have a history and a practical basis can be used by localization and adaptation to the iernal conditions of the coury in order to be more efficie and applicable in practice.
The head of the marine engineering faculty considered the direct achieveme of this conference to be a move towards the industry in the field of standardization and coinued: perhaps it is not possible to see immediate changes at the end of the conference, but such eves will definitely be a platform for the formation and developme of local standards in the coury. Holding a conference and exchange of opinions between professors, academics and industrialists is considered one of the main tools for creating transformation in the field of national standards.
The role of the conference in developing national standards
The head of the Marine Engineering Faculty of Amir Kabir University of Technology emphasized that all the research preseed in the form of articles in this conference will be used by university professors in completing and developing national standards, and poied out that active groups in the Marine Standards Developme Office of the Marine Engineering Faculty are working on developing national standards and this process has been coinuously followed for the past three years.
Explaining the existing gaps in the standardization of the sea area, he said: In the iernational standard institutions, several practical sections have been compiled. In Iran, the Ports and Maritime Organization acts as the main trustee of the implemeation of standards and applies global standards in the coury under the umbrella of the Iernational Maritime Organization (IMO).
He added: In addition to applying standards, the Ports Organization also participates in developing new ones and plays an active role in IMO meetings. In this process, universities also play a supporting role, and the professors of Amirkabir University of Technology, in ieraction with the sub-groups of the ports organization, participate in reviewing and commeing on the standards discussed in IMO.
Kiast noted: Iegrating university activities with the Ports Organization is the same role that our coury plays in the developme and implemeation of new maritime standards.
Design and construction of standard vessels in the coury
In response to a question about the use of standards in the design of new vessels, the head of the marine engineering school said: In the coury’s industry, several models have been started for the design and construction of standard vessels. Some of these designs are inspired by foreign models, but currely the process of localization and revision of these models is underway inside the coury to adapt to Iran’s technical and climatic conditions.
He emphasized: The ultimate goal of these efforts is to achieve the indigenous model of designing and building standard marine vessels so that Iran can play a more promine role in the marine industry at the regional and iernational level.
The head of the marine engineering faculty of Amirkabir University of Technology poied out the process of designing and localizing standards in the marine industry and explained: In many cases, we use similar foreign or iernational models and basic maps for the design of marine vessels and structures, then we localize and adjust the necessary design calculations in accordance with the goals and missions of the desired vessel.
In response to a question about the coordination between universities, standards organization and ports and maritime organization, he said: Several years ago, through the standard developme office in the marine engineering faculty, the maritime industry organization has approached the universities to establish this coordination. The success of this path depends on holding meetings, gatherings and specialized meetings. We have started this path and the transfer of the needs and demands of domestic maritime organizations to the university and the university’s effort to play a developmeal role in the field of standards is underway.
The challenges of implemeing iernational standards in Iran
Kiast said about the challenges of implemeing iernational standards such as IMO in Iran: Many standards can help our coury to have standard vessels and marine structures, but some standards carry a heavy financial and technological burden. For example, the regulations related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (MARPOL) require the maritime industry to move towards reducing and eveually zeroing the production of greenhouse gases; At the same time, this process requires new technologies and significa investme, and its implemeation is costly.
He added: The implemeation of these standards will be costly for all couries, but in the long run it will benefit the manufacturers and the environme. Because the preservation of seas and natural resources requires the implemeation of these rules.
Kiast considered environmeal protection as one of the approaches of this conference and said: One of the ten axes of the conference is standards in the field of environme. We accept papers from researchers and try to organize the conference with comprehensive coverage of standard aspects including environme. The goal is to seriously consider environmeal issues in the developme of standards.
marine renewable energy; Opportunities and gaps
The head of the marine engineering faculty said about Iran’s plans to develop national standards for marine renewable energy: marine renewable energy is one of the areas that are more environmeally friendly and sensitive to the environme. Activities in this field have been carried out in our coury, but it is still not widespread. We hope that with the developme of research activities and the ery of universities and industry io this field, as well as by advancing standardization issues, domestic researchers will be able to create more fields in this sector.
The head of the marine engineering faculty meioned about Iran’s role in the iernational maritime standardization system: the compilation and developme of standards at the iernational level is usually done by couries with scieific and industrial history. Our coury has experience and capacity in some areas; But standard developme requires extensive and coinuous scieific and industrial support. Universities and industry should move together so that we can play a more active role in the production and developme of standards.
He clarified: This standard developme process should be followed in a planned manner, with the participation of various institutions and with a focus on localization and adaptation to national conditions, so that in the future Iran can be not only a consumer, but also a producer and leader in some areas of marine standards.
Coinuation of maritime standardization activities with the establishme of a standard research ceer
Kiast, referring to the developme process of marine standardization activities in the university, said: Fortunately, the activities related to the developme of standards in the marine engineering faculty started in 1400 and have been growing uil now. This process needs support, which fortunately related organizations, both in the defense and civilian sectors, provide the necessary support.
He added: The Standard Developme Office in the Faculty of Marine Engineering is becoming a marine research ceer, and this ceer will be a sub-set of the Marine Research Institute, which includes several research ceers. The standard research ceer will be one of the key parts of this new structure, which will be realized in the near future with the support of the releva ceers.
Regarding the time and details of holding the “Iernational Conference on Standardization and Standardization in Maritime Industries”, Kiast said: This conference will be held on December 12 this year. Even though the field of standards has received less atteion in universities, so far about 98 scieific research articles have been se to the secretariat, of which about 40 articles will be accepted for preseation on the day of the conference, and the rest of the accepted articles will be preseed as posters. Judging of articles by professors of universities across the coury in the maritime field is underway.
He coinued: On the day of the conference, we will have three parallel meetings, and efforts have been made to prese articles not only by studes, but also by technical professors to personally prese and exchange ideas. The presence of professors in this process will help to transfer knowledge and form effective scieific dialogues.
The head of the marine engineering faculty announced the holding of a side exhibition next to the conference and said: the specialized exhibition of this eve with about 25 booths is being prepared and organizations such as the Marine Industries Organization, the Iran Defense Standard Ceer, the National Standards Organization of the coury and a number of private sector industries will be prese in it. This exhibition will compleme the scieific part of the conference and provide an environme for ieraction between the industry and the university.
He also added about the plans for the second day of the eve: Specialized workshops will be held on the second day of the eve. In these workshops, promine experts from abroad who are active in the field of standards and regulations of classification institutions will be used. The presence of these experts can coribute to the scieific richness of the conference and the exchange of knowledge between domestic and foreign researchers.
Kiast expressed his hope that this eve will be an effective step in the developme of local standardization and the promotion of the coury’s scieific position in the field of marine industries.
