The research team from the Faculty of Geology at the University of Tehran has discovered a key mechanism in unusual hydrocarbon tanks in the Abadan Dasht area, according to the University of Tehran.
The study, led by Hamza Mehrabi, Associate Professor of the University of Tehran, in collaboration with Engineer Elham Talebi, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Geology, was published in the accredited international journal Facies of Springer Publishing.
Mehrabi, a faculty member of the Faculty of Geological Schools of Science, said that “unusual tanks” are called oil or gas reservoirs, which are not possible or very expensive due to specific geological properties (such as very small porosity or placement in hard stones). “This study focuses on micro -crystallized carbonate tanks with very small pores in the important oil region of Abadan plain.”
“The results of this study showed that although these stones have a lot of porosity, the bottlenecks between these pores are extremely narrow,” said a researcher at the University of Tehran. “It is as if the reservoir has imprisoned oil in millions of small containers that are very narrow and unable to move.”
“It was clear that the quality of the tank was strongly affected by the type of stone tissue and chemical changes that the rocks have experienced in the depths of the Earth for millions of years, and rocks that have been affected by groundwater in the past have more open bottlenecks and are more suitable for extraction,” he said.
“These findings help oil companies focus on identified areas and the use of tank stimulation techniques tailored to the properties of micro -hydraulic (such as advanced hydraulic failure), to increase the productivity of these unusual reserves significantly,” Mehrabi said.
“The exact understanding of the relationship between the geological history of the rocks and the quality of the reservoir is the key to the economic development of unusual tanks in the region,” said the Associate Professor of Science Faculty. “This study provides a map for more targeted exploration.”
In the end, he said, “The results insist that there is not enough to have too much empty space in the stone; What is decisive is the possibility of flowing oil through the network of these small pores. “
It is worth noting that this achievement is an important step in increasing indigenous knowledge and reducing dependence on foreign technology in exploiting the country’s complex hydrocarbon resources.
