Hungary’s insistence on Ukrainian membership in the European Union
The Hungarian prime minister said Ukrainian membership in the European Union is “a direct threat to Hungary” and should not be allowed to do so.
According to RCO News Agency, Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Urban said in a speech Sunday: “Ukraine’s membership in the European Union is a direct threat to us and we should not allow Ukraine to be members of the union.”
“Ukraine wants to join the European Union immediately, and this is the biggest threat to Hungary because of its desire to European currency,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
“Even before the war, Ukraine was a bankrupt country and now it will be bankrupt during the war, and then,” he said. “They can’t stand on their own feet and constantly need others’ money.”
Urban also said, “Kiev does not care that it spreads conflict into Europe, bankruptcy of European farmers, and Hungary becomes a gateway for the Ukrainian mafia.”
Unlike many EU member states, Hungary has rejected the sending of any deadly weapons to Ukraine and focuses on a peaceful solution to the conflict. It has also repeatedly criticized the EU sanctions against Russia, and its prime minister has described the sanctions and restrictions as a “failure” that merely worse the energy crisis.
“Ukraine is Europe’s most corrupt country and its membership in the European Union will open the way for this corruption,” said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siamerto, while calling Ukraine a “corrupt” country.
