Calas: NATO will survive the Trump era!

Kaya Calas emphasized that NATO is left behind, despite Trump’s pressure, but some couries must make tough decisions on military spending. Trump has called for a 5 % increase in military funding.
EU foreign policy chief Kaya Calas said NATO will remain unified despite US Preside Donald Trump’s pressure.
However, he warned that some member states should be ready to make difficult decisions to achieve the level of military spending.
In an ierview with the Spanish newspaper El Mondo on Monday, Calas faced the question, “Will NATO survive Trump’s era?”
“I’m sure,” he replied. It is a strong alliance that remains alive and sustainable, “adding that member states have pledged to allocate at least 2 % of their GDP to military costs – a significa portion of the block yet.
“I understand the problems of some couries, but the idea of leaving this situation without making difficult and unnecessary decisions is an illusion,” he said.
In this regard, Calas poied to his prime minister in Estonia, during which taxes increased.
In response to the question why the EU does not propose direct subsidies for couries behind the defense costs, Calas explained that the block should balance the ierests of the debtor couries and the couries that have the largest share in the union’s budget.
He added that the European Union has taken “support measures in financial laws” to give member couries more space, which can provide various options to increase costs.
Trump has pushed NATO member states from his first presidency to allocate more for their defense.
While NATO members have agreed to reach a 5 % level, the US preside suggested in February that NATO members should spend up to 5 % of their GDP for defense.
Last moh, he warned, “If they don’t pay, I won’t defend them.”
NATO Secretary -General Mark Route announced that Trump has the right to demand increased military spending from European couries.
NATO leaders have insisted that the increase in military spending is aimed at deterrence in Russia in the midst of Ukraine’s conflict, according to Rasha Todi. Some officials have said Moscow may carry out a full -fledged attack against the US -led block in the next few years.
However, Russian Preside Vladimir Putin has called the speculation “nonsense” and insisted that Moscow has no ierest in doing so.
