Varanasi, one of the most sacred cities in India, has long been known by religious rituals, the shores of the Ganges and the magnifice temples. The city, dubbed the Hinduism beliefs, a land belonging to the “God of Shiva”, hosts unique inhabitas; Cows that live freely with people and are an iegral part of the city’s culture and spirituality.
The Indian photographer, Superiyo R Sarkar, has attempted to portray the role of these sacred cows in the daily lives of the people in his photography project, “Coalition”. These animals are seen not only in the streets, but also in homes, markets, and even in bodies. They roam the city without any restrictions, and people treat them with respect and kindness.
According to Hindus, cows are visualized by Nandi, a loyal compound of Shiva, and therefore have a special sanctity. Their presence in this city is not limited to a cultural reality; Rather, it represes a long -standing coexistence between humans and the animal that is less common in the world.
Black and white images of work with dramatic lighting and influeial compositions reflect the deep sense of communication with these creatures. This project is not only a documeary of an ancie tradition, but also a beautiful manifestation of human and nature ieraction in one of the most mysterious cities in the world.
