Criticisms of the arrest of a pro-Palestinian journalist in Switzerland
The deteion of an American pro-Palestinian journalist by the Swiss governme brought protests from iernational legal institutions.
According to RCO News Agency, Al Jazeera reported that the Swiss governme arrested Ali Abu Nameh, an American pro-Palestinian journalist and executive director of the Electronic Iifada website, in Zurich.
United Nations human rights experts and activists condemned the arrest of this American journalist.
These experts described this arrest as a serious threat to freedom of expression, especially considering the tightening of restrictions on pro-Palestinian activists in Europe.
In this regard, Irene Khan, the UN special rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, described the News of Abu Nameh’s arrest as “shocking”.
He asked the Swiss authorities to immediately investigate this matter and release him.
Irene Khan further emphasized that such actions are corary to the principles of freedom of expression that the United Nations defends.
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, also responded to this action by the Swiss governme, stating that the atmosphere surrounding freedom of expression in Europe has become increasingly poisoned, and said: This should worry us all.
Albanese emphasized that restricting freedom of expression threatens the basic principles of human rights, especially in cases related to the defense of the rights of oppressed people.
The Swiss Human Rights Organization, a pro-Palestinian organization, issued a petition calling for the immediate release of Abu Nemeh.
The petition states that this arrest is a violation of freedom of speech and a threat to human rights activists.
The Electronic Iifada website, run by Abu Nameh, describes itself as a “Palestinian weapon for comprehensive education” and publishes coe that supports the Palestinian issue and criticizes the policies of the Zionist regime.
