Warning of the senior represeative of the Russian Parliame about Greenland’s accession to the United States
A senior member of the Russian parliame warned about the US preside-elect’s proposal to join the US territory of Greenland, stressing that the annexation of Greenland to the US would be a military threat.
According to RCO News Agency, “Andrei Kartapulov”, the senior member of the Russian Parliame, in response to Donald Trump’s stateme about the annexation of Greenland to the United States, said that this Arctic island could be a springboard for a future war.
The chairman of the defense committee of the Russian Duma said that the United States could use Greenland to attack Russia.
His commes came after the US preside-elect repeated his old plan to buy Greenland, the self-governing Arctic island, from Denmark.
Trump has emphasized that ownership and corol of Greenland is an absolute necessity for US national security.
Kartapulov, in response to the question of Novosti News agency that “will the annexation of Greenland to the United States be a poteial military threat to Russia?” He described it as self-evide and said: Greenland constitutes a very large area in the Arctic and provides direct access to the Arctic, so it would not be the best option for us.
The Russian lawmaker argued that the island could serve as a good springboard for the US in a hypothetical future iercoineal conflict.
Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman of the Kremlin (Russian Presideial Palace), also emphasized to reporters on Thursday that Moscow is ierested in maiaining the atmosphere of peace and stability in the region.
The Kremlin spokesman said that Russia is closely monitoring the situation.
He emphasized that the Arctic is in the area of national and strategic ierests of Russia and this coury is ierested in peace and stability there.
Also, Nikolai Patrushev, a senior aide to the Russian preside, warned in September that “military activity by NATO members in the Arctic increases the poteial for conflict.”
Danish authorities have categorically rejected the possibility of selling the island of Greenland. “Greenland is not for sale and will not be in the future,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated on Tuesday.
Greenland In 2009, Greenland won the right to declare independence through a referendum. The pro-independence prime minister of the island has also rejected Trump’s purchase offer.
