Armenia may reduce the presence of Russian border guards

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan raised the possibility of reducing the presence of Russian border guards on the border of Armenia and Türkiye in case of normalization of relations between Yerevan and Ankara.
According to Isna, in a press conference, in response to a question about the possibility of reducing the presence of Russian border guards, Mirzoyan said: “If there is an open and active border between Armenia and Turkey, as well as a reliable environme, we can also examine this issue.”
According to Ryanavosti News agency, Armenian authorities consider Russian border guards and their military base to be an importa part of Yerevan’s national security. There are no diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Armenia and the border between the two couries has been closed since 1993 at the initiative of Ankara. The complex relations between these two couries have been created for various reasons, including Ankara’s support for Azerbaijan’s positions on the Karabakh issue and Turkey’s strong reaction to the process of recognizing the Armenian Genocide in 1915.
The first meeting of special represeatives of Armenia and Türkiye to normalize relations between the two couries was held in Moscow in January 2022.
The Deputy Speaker of the Armenian Parliame and the former Ambassador of Türkiye to America participated in this meeting. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, during the negotiations, the parties showed their readiness to conduct dialogue in a constructive and non-political framework.
Several other meetings have been held in Vienna in this regard.
