In 2015, Russia participated in the Syrian civil war at the request of Bashar al-Assad. After the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Assad we to Moscow. Many Russian forces have since left Syria, but some are still stationed at Tartus naval base and Hmeimim air base.
