Biden we to Amazon – ISNA
US Preside Joe Biden made history by visiting the Amazon rainforest, becoming the first US preside to visit this region.
According to RCO News Agency, Biden visited the Amazon rainforest on Sunday as the first sitting preside of the United States and drew atteion to the dangers of global warming.
Biden’s trip to Manaus, Brazil included a trip to the Amazon and Rio Negro rivers, which have been severely affected by the region’s worst drought in decades. Along with Brazilian scieist Carlos Nober, Biden warned about the dire state of rainforests due to climate change caused by deforestation.
During his visit to the Amazon rainforest, he said: “Today, I am proud to be the first US preside to visit the Amazon rainforest. “I will be committed to protecting the rainforests.”
Biden added: “The best tools to deal with drought and climate change are forests and trees, but every minute in the world, an area equal to 10 football fields is cut down.”

During his four-hour stop, Biden announced an additional $50 million in donations to Amazon’s fund. Last year, he promised to pay 500 million dollars to the fund, but according to the Reuters News agency, only a part of it has been delivered so far.

Biden also met with indigenous leaders at an Amazon museum and praised Brazil’s efforts under Preside Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to end deforestation by 2030. Protecting rainforests is critical to mitigating climate change because they absorb large amous of carbon dioxide.
The meeting comes ahead of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, where global governance and climate change will be key issues. However, Biden’s climate initiatives face uncertaiy with Preside-elect Donald Trump’s return to power in January. Trump has pledged to reverse Biden’s climate policies, prioritize fossil fuel production and reduce regulations on gasoline vehicles.
