Norway’s 340 million euro deal with America to buy air defense systems
Norwegian officials announced that they have agreed to purchase missile defense systems from the United States in a deal worth 340 million euros.
According to Isna, this is one of the biggest coracts and military purchases that the Norwegian Armed Forces have made so far.
According to the Euronews News channel, Norway’s military and defense equipme agency announced in a stateme that Defense Minister Bjorn Arild Gram said that with newer and more missiles, Norway’s armed forces will have a better ability to protect the coury against air attacks.
Norway shares about 200 kilometers of border with Russia and has increased its defenses since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022. The missiles purchased in this coract are mainly for the ground air defense systems of this coury.
These weapons can also be installed on F-35 fighters, which Norway has coributed to their developme. This coury currely has 34 F-35 fighter planes in the service of the air force.
This agreeme is one of the latest actions by the Nordic couries, which are looking to strengthen their defense systems since the Russian attack on Ukraine.
While Norway, Denmark and Iceland are founding members of NATO in 1949, Sweden and Finland have always resisted requests to join this military alliance.
At the June 2022 NATO meeting in Madrid, Sweden and Finland were officially invited to join NATO and the formal requiremes for membership were implemeed.
After joining NATO, Finland increased its defense spending by more than 2 billion euros. Sweden, which reiroduced conscription in 2017, has increased its defense budget by 20% to 2.8% of GDP by 2028.
