The monkeys who received metformin daily in this study showed much better brain function than the corol group, and their neural activity was more similar to that of younger monkeys. In addition, this drug has positive effects on other organs, including the liver, kidney, skin, and lungs, and has slowed down the aging process in them.
Researchers believe that metformin protects cells from damage caused by aging by activating a protein called NRF2. NRF2 protein plays an importa role in fighting inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are considered to be the main factors of aging.
According to the promising results of this research, researchers have decided to conduct more extensive clinical studies on humans. Currely, a clinical trial with the participation of 120 people is underway, in which the effectiveness of metformin in slowing down the aging process in humans is investigated. This trial is being implemeed in collaboration with Merck Pharmaceuticals, the developer of Metformin.
