What is a hernia and how is it treated? Is exercise suitable for hernia? Many people suffer from umbilical hernia. There are different types of hernia and it may occur for many reasons. But don’t worry; Whatever type of hernia you have, it can be treated. In this article, we will discuss the issue of umbilical hernia in detail and we will introduce several exercises for hernia and its treatment.

What is a hernia and what are its types?

Hernia is a type of disease that occurs as a result of the protrusion of one of the internal organs of the body from a point or hole in the surrounding muscles. That is, if your abdominal wall bulges and swells abnormally, you have this disease.

To put it simply, a hernia occurs when a part of your body (usually the intestine) tears through the muscle wall through a weak point in the body and enters another space.

Hernia can occur in different parts of the body. This complication has different types, each of which has its own characteristics and treatment methods. Based on the place of occurrence, this disease is divided into the following types:

  • Groin: In this type of hernia, the protrusion usually occurs in the groin area or inside the scrotum, and its occurrence is more common in men than women.
  • Rani: This bump usually occurs in the upper part of the thigh and its occurrence is more common in women than men.
  • Nafi: This type of protrusion usually creates a bulge around the navel and only happens when the muscles around the navel become weak and cannot support this area.
  • Shear: This type of hernia usually has nothing to do with muscle weakness and is caused by surgery. In such a way that the muscles have already been separated by performing surgery on the abdominal wall.

What causes hernia disease?

Hernia disease may be with you since birth without any cause or background; Or it may develop over time and with the weakness of the abdominal wall. Of course, it goes without saying that pressure on these weak areas also aggravates the occurrence of hernia.

That is, if your abdominal wall muscles are weak and you lift a heavy object, the probability of hernia or hernia will increase to more than 60%. Even pregnancy, which causes more pressure on the abdominal muscles and weakens these muscles, is also one of the causes of hernia.

Other causes of hernia

This complication is caused by various reasons. In this section, we mention several of them:

  • pregnancy
  • overweight
  • Chronic cough
  • Chronic constipation
  • Frequent movements of heavy objects
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Abdominal surgeries
  • Genetic and hereditary background
  • Frequent and severe vomiting

What are the ways to treat hernia?

Except for the abdominal hernia, which will be treated by itself by the age of 4, the rest of the hernia types must be treated, and usually the treatment solution for this disease is nothing but surgery. In surgery, after local or general anesthesia, they create a gap in the abdominal wall. Then, the intestine is returned to its original place and the tissues and muscles are brought together with sutures. After surgery, the probability of hernia recurrence is less than 5%.

In some cases, instead of surgery, specialists use a hernia strap and apply pressure to the protruding area to help it move. Remember that the hernia bandage will only be the answer in less serious cases, otherwise it will only reduce the symptoms of the disease and will not work to treat the hernia.

Also, doing certain sports will help prevent and treat hernia. Unfortunately, hernia disease is one of the most common diseases in Iran and it is lurking more than you think. Therefore, the best solution is to prevent the occurrence of this disease.

Is exercise harmful for hernia?

The short answer is no, exercise is not harmful for hernia and people who have this disease, but exercise should be done with caution and under the supervision of a doctor.. Strenuous activities and sports, especially those that put pressure on the midsection and abdomen, will make your hernia worse and should not be done. But there is no problem with light and calm sports such as walking and swimming.

Be careful that Vitamin does not recommend you to exercise for hernia. The only person who can decide about this is your doctor. Depending on the severity of the hernia and your other conditions, the doctor will guide you regarding the exercise for the hernia.

Is walking harmful for hernia?

No, walking is a light, gentle, low-stress exercise, and it is not a problem for someone with a hernia to walk. An umbilical hernia does not mean that you should be immobile and at absolute rest, your body still needs activity and mobility, and by the way, proper activity helps to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Regular walking can help strengthen the abdominal muscles and thereby reduce the pressure on the hernia.

But still, it is better to consult your doctor before starting walking (or any activity) and also increase the distance slowly and gradually.

Examples of exercise to prevent hernia

  • Sit on the floor in the plank position;
  • so that your hand is ninety degrees and your forearm is completely on the ground;
  • The spine should be parallel to the ground;
  • then place your body on the left side so that the weight of the body is on one of the hands;
  • Your body should form a straight line from your ears to your ankles.

  • Remove the abdominal wheel and lie on the floor so that your knees and toes are on the floor;
  • put the hands on the bar;
  • keep your back straight and your hips forward;
  • Move forward and push the wheel forward;
  • Move forward until the body is parallel and level with the ground;
  • Then go back.

How to move

  • First, sit on the floor;
  • The legs should be bent at the knees and separate from the ground;
  • To simplify the movement, you can also lock your feet in a fixed place or put your heel on the ground to maintain balance;
  • Lean the upper body back slightly so that it becomes inclined;
  • Now, turn the upper body to the right;
  • Be sure to maintain the contraction of the abdominal muscles while performing the movement; Then return to the starting point;
  • Make sure you use the lateral abdominal muscles to rotate, not just the shoulders;
  • Repeat the same process in rotation;
  • To make the movement heavier, you can separate your feet from the ground.

  • The distance between the legs should be the width of the shoulders and the soles of the feet should be on the ground;
  • the knee angle should be slightly more than 90 degrees;
  • This will be your starting point;
  • Now lift your midsection off the ground until your body is parallel to the ground;
  • Contract the hips and pause for a moment;
  • Open the knees a little and then return to the starting point;
  • Now go down slowly, but do not let your midsection touch the floor during a set.
