Conditional ratification of the Rome Statute in Ukraine

Ukraine’s parliame approved the Rome Statute, which is a condition for the coury to join the Iernational Criminal Court, but lawmakers are concerned that Ukrainian citizens will be accused of war crimes at the court.
According to ISNA, “Yaroslav Zhelezniak”, a Ukrainian legislator, announced that the parliame of this coury has approved the Rome Statute; The statute which is the fundameal docume of the Iernational Criminal Court.
This Ukrainian lawmaker announced on his Telegram channel that 281 out of 328 represeatives of Ukraine have agreed to the ratification of this statute, “Parliame has supported the ratification of the Rome Statute.”
Another Ukrainian lawmaker, “Irina Khrushchenko”, said that this iernational treaty was approved with the condition that the Iernational Criminal Court would not have jurisdiction to investigate the accusations of Ukrainian citizens under Article 8 of the Rome Statute for seven years after its ery io force; Article that includes war crimes.
The member of the Ukrainian parliame said that Ukrainian lawmakers are still considering the right time to impleme this statute, because they fear that Ukrainian citizens will be convicted of war crimes and Kiev will be forced to comply with the rulings of the Iernational Criminal Court.
In mid-June, Ukraine pledged to ratify the treaty as part of its security agreeme with Japan, as well as the EU-Ukraine Cooperation Agreeme.
The Rome Statute was drafted in 1998 to establish the Iernational Criminal Court so that the iergovernmeal organization could investigate genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression. So far, 137 couries have signed this treaty, but only 124 couries have officially ratified it.
