Anti-government protests in Cameroon left one dead and 20 injured – Mehr News Agency | RCO News Agency
According to Mehr news agency, citing Al-Mayadin, Cameroon’s security forces dispersed the gathering of opponents of the country’s government with tear gas last night.
The supporters of the opposition party of the Cameroon government had gathered last night in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, and the city of Garoua in the north of the country to protest the result of the presidential election on October 12, when they were met with violent action by the police of this country.
The initial results of the vote counting committee show that “Paul Biya”, the president of the past terms of this country, is on the verge of winning the elections to reach his eighth term as president..
Local media reported that the police opened fire on protesters in the Bombumari area of Garwa city in the north of the country, killing one person. Reports indicate that the person killed was a primary school teacher who was killed while returning from work.
The results of the elections held in Cameroon and the announcement of the victory of the ruling party take place while Issa Chiroma, the main rival of the president and former minister of this country, announced his victory in the elections last week and warned that any other result may lead the country to unrest.
Protests broke out across Cameroon after news broke that Biya had been re-elected as Cameroon’s president. Protesters in Garwa town and other towns including Bafusam, Deshang, Kusiri and Douala protested the alleged irregularities in the counting of votes.
Cameroon’s government, of course, denied the allegations of violations and called for people to remain calm until the announcement of the election results. Cameroon’s Interior Minister Paul Atanga Ngi announced yesterday that more than 20 people have been arrested in the city of Garoua during street protests.
He added in a statement that some of the detainees are facing charges of inciting rebellion and disobedience and will be tried in a military court.
