Special Meeting of Security Council as the tensions between the US and Venezuela – Mehr News Agency | Iranian and world news
The UN Security Council will hold a meeting on Friday to intensify tensions between Venezuela and the United States, according to Mehr News Agency.
A source at the Security Council told Sputnik that Venezuela has requested the meeting and was supported by Russia and China.
The emergency session is followed by intensifying tensions in the area after a series of sea tensions between US forces and Venezuelan boats near the coast.
Türkiye’s TRT network also announced that Venezuela submitted the request on Thursday in a letter to Vasili Nabenzia, Russian ambassador to the United Nations and the Security Council president.
In its letter, Venezuela has accused US President Donald Trump of trying to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro and threaten regional and international peace, security and stability.
Maduro’s government also announced the possibility of an imminent attack on the country.
The request came a day after members of the US Congress voted in favor of a bill that could limit Trump’s ability to use the deadly military force against drug traffickers.
The US military has carried out four deadly attacks in the Caribbean since the rise of its naval forces in the region for what Trump has declared “armed conflict” with drug trafficking groups.
However, the Maduro government has announced that the White House is using drug trafficking only as an excuse for the operation.
