Former Panama President Ricardo Martinley, who was sentenced to more than a decade of prison for money laundering, went to the country, according to Mehr News Agency.
Martinley stayed at the Nicaragua Embassy in Panamas City since February last year.
Panama officials said in a statement that “in accordance with the approved asylum convention and the political asylum approved, the safe route from the Nicaragua Embassy to the local airport has been provided to transfer the former Panama president.”
The Panama Foreign Minister announced that the granting of asylum to Martinley “is part of Colombia’s humanitarian tradition aimed at protecting people who are prosecuted for political reasons.”
