Paltiko: The European Union speeds up Ukrainian acceptance negotiations
The EU Commissioner for the Development of the Political -Economic Institution said Brussels is ready to accelerate negotiations with Kiev by opening two “areas” by the mid -year.
Ukraine applied for membership in the European Union in February and was awarded the title of an official candidate late that year. Joining the European Union requires the completion of six “areas” of dialogue, including four chapters of different requirements.
To date, Kiev has not started even one area of dialogue.
“From a technical point of view, we can be ready to open two areas of dialogue for Ukraine in the first half of the year,” the EU Commissioner for expansion told reporters on Tuesday during a News conference in Brussels. “This is not possible without member states.”
The admission process requires the integrated consent of the EU member states at each stage. Hungary, Slovakia and Austria have protested the Ukrainian membership for various reasons. However, the Brussels leadership seems to support Kiev.
“The EU should be further expanded and new member states,” Rasha Todi reported at the same press conference.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Prime Minister Olga Stefanishina traveled to Brussels to try to enter the European Union faster. The Paltiko news website described his trip as part of an attempt to “strengthen” Kiev’s position before the anticipated peace talks with Moscow.
The previous EU Commission had suggested that if Ukraine had made adequate progress in areas such as political and judicial reform as well as the fight against organized crimes and corruption, it could join the block by year 3. Last June, Kiev’s Katarina Matrnova, the EU, said it was a “very realistic history” year.
Ukraine, by reforming its constitution in the year, has been a member of the EU and NATO national goals. While Russia did not oppose Kiev’s aspirations in the European Union at the time, it firmly opposed any involvement in the US -led military block.
Following the intensification of clashes between Moscow and Kiev in year 6, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described the EU as a “offensive actor” who “declares his ambitions far beyond the continent.”
