The new US defense minister: We are not looking to fight in a new war
After taking the oath of office, the US Secretary of Defense announced: “In the Pentagon, we will restore our military power.” We are not looking for a new war, but we will prevent them from happening with deterrence.
According to IsnaPete Hegst was sworn in to lead the Defense Department under Donald Trump on Saturday evening Tehran time, after weeks of turmoil over allegations of sexual misconduct and claims of a drinking problem in the past.
J.D. Vance, the vice president of the United States of America, said in his introductory remarks at the inauguration ceremony that the Trump administration will “assist” in the deployment of American military forces around the world under the leadership of Hogst in the Department of Defense.
Surrounded by his family, Hegst then raised his right hand and took the oath.
Hegst, who took to the microphone after being sworn in, thanked his wife and family for their support and Trump, saying the United States “couldn’t have had a better commander-in-chief (president).”
He pledged that the United States would pursue “peace through strength” under his leadership at the Pentagon.
During the vote to confirm Hogst’s qualifications, Vance voted to confirm Trump’s choice for the Department of Defense by 51 votes to 50. According to CNN, Vance’s decision ended allegations of sexual assault, excessive drinking and financial mismanagement against Hegst.
Former Republican Party leader Mitch McConnell and Alaska Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins joined Democrats in opposing Heggst’s nomination, forcing Vance to become the second vice president to vote to confirm the nomination.
In this regard, Hegst thanked the Vice President of the United States for this action in his speech.
In the continuation of his speech, he promised to support American soldiers in “all parts of the world” and put America and the interests of this country as his priority.
“At the Pentagon, we will restore our military strength,” Hegst continued. “We are not looking for a new war, but we will prevent them from happening with deterrence.”
He claimed: “But if we have to fight, we will enter the war with a large and powerful force.”
In the end, the new US defense secretary thanked Trump and the American citizens.
After Hegst’s speech, a question-and-answer session took place, and a reporter asked her how much trust women in the U.S. military should have in light of the allegations against her.
But the US vice president prevented Hegst from answering and said himself: “All soldiers, regardless of their gender, should trust Hegst.”
Vance also said in response to another question about the possibility of disqualification of some proposed members of Trump’s cabinet: “It doesn’t matter, we won the election.”
