Pentagon: America is revising its nuclear deterrence strategy! – Mehr News agency RCO News Agency
According to Mehr news agency, citing Rashatoudi, the US Ministry of Defense announced in a report that the country will adapt its nuclear deterrence strategy to possible threats from Russia and China.
The Pentagon’s statement stated that “several nuclear enemies have challenged the security of the United States, its allies and partners. These belligerent countries are developing and modernizing their nuclear arsenals.
Richard Johnson, the Deputy Secretary of Defense of the United States, highlighted two countries, Russia and China, and mentioned that the United States may revise its nuclear stance in 2022 with the aim of nuclear deterrence.
According to him, in order to address these concerns, the Pentagon has already taken steps to exploit capabilities aimed at deterrence and nuclear flexibility. Among the main elements of these actions, we can mention the development of the “B-61-13” nuclear bomb, as well as increasing the readiness of the “Ohio-class” nuclear powered submarines.
In October last year, the Pentagon announced the development of the new generation of the B-61 bomb and announced that this bomb would replace some older versions and provide more options “against some tougher military targets with extensive regional coverage”.
The Ohio-class nuclear submarine is the core element of the US nuclear triad and is specifically designed for nuclear deterrence. These submarines can be armed with “Trident” missiles, which have a range of more than 12,000 kilometers.
Russian President Vladimir Putin approved changes and reforms in Russia’s nuclear doctrine after Washington gave Kiev the green light to use Western long-range missiles deep inside Moscow. According to this document, if a non-nuclear country attacks Russia with long-range missiles of a nuclear power, the option of using nuclear weapons is on Moscow’s table.
