Grossi goes to the Kursk nuclear power plant
Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), plans to visit the Kursk nuclear power plant and its satellite city “Kurchatov” on Tuesday to personally assess the situation in the region.
According to Isna, Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that the armed forces of Ukraine tried to attack the Kursk nuclear power plant on the night of August 22 and 23. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, also noted that Russia is in close contact with the International Atomic Energy Agency Secretariat regarding the Kiev regime’s provocations against the Zaporizhia and Kursk power plants.
Grossi said in a statement: “Given the critical situation in the region, I personally lead the mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) in the Russian Federation.”
According to Sputnik, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, stated that Grossi will visit the Kursk power plant and the city of Kurchatov.
“Since the new developments and the increased level of military activity in the vicinity of the Kursk nuclear power plant, I have closely followed the developments, especially in relation to this plant,” Grossi said in his statement.
According to him, the agency intends to conduct an independent assessment of the condition of this facility and discuss possible further measures to assess the nuclear safety and protection of the Kursk nuclear power plant.
He also asked the involved parties to observe the seven pillars of nuclear safety in relation to the Kursk nuclear power plant, as well as the five specific principles that were previously developed for the protection of the Zaporizhia power plant, and not to jeopardize nuclear safety under any circumstances.
Meanwhile, the situation at the Zaporizhia power plant is still tense. This power plant and its satellite city are regularly shelled by Ukrainian armed forces drones. As a result of a shelling in August, a fire broke out in the cooling towers of the power plant. However, the fire did not affect the operation of this power plant.
Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Army, said that at 5:30 a.m. on August 6, units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched an offensive to seize territory in the Kursk region, but their advance was halted. He emphasized: the operation in the Kursk region will be completed with the defeat of the enemy and reaching the government borders.
