United Nations: We are following the developments regarding Durov’s arrest
Stephane Dujarric, the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, announced on Monday that the organization is investigating the developments regarding the arrest of Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging service.
According to RCO News Agency, Dujarric said about Durov’s arrest: “We are following the circumstances, but we are not commenting on this at the moment.”
39-year-old Durov was arrested on Saturday evening at an airport in the suburbs of Paris while traveling from the Republic of Azerbaijan.
It is reported that he will be tried today on the charge of terrorism, drug trafficking and money laundering along with other charges.
On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the arrest of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov for political reasons and said that the judicial authorities should decide on this case.
The President of France wrote on the X social network: “The arrest of the Telegram manager was carried out in France as part of a judicial investigation. This is by no means a political decision. It is up to the judges to decide on this matter.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the country’s embassy in Paris is clarifying the situation about Durov and asked Western non-governmental organizations to demand his release.
Vladislav Davankov, the deputy head of the Russian State Duma, said: “Russia demands the immediate release of Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram.”
