Earth warming, which is the result of human activities, including burning fossil fuels, has created a serious threat to polar ice and animals such as penguins. Increasing seawater and melting of ice has made the emperor’s penguin survival, which is dependent on marine ice for filling, reproduction and nutrition. Iranian designer Sajjad Navidi has attempted to find a new way to deal with the crisis by presenting an innovative plan for the penguin protection system. (Yanko Design)

The Sajjad Navidi project, which has reached the final stage of the Fundation Jacques Rougerie’s biennial competition in the “Innovation for the Sea”, includes two parts; Heat Igloo on the surface of the ice and underwater cooling system. Igloo is a kind of ice houses used by northern natives.
Navidi in his design is inspired by the “social temperature adjustment” behavior of penguins; Behavior in which birds maintain their body heat by group gathering. According to his design, Eglui is on the surface of the melting ice, and the penguins can come together to save energy. Below the Iglu is a cooling system inspired by marine sponges, which supplies its energy from a pandolian fluctuation that moves with the ocean flow.

By examining the status of the ice, these smart systems automatically separate from frozen ice and attach to melting ice to convey the required cold. This way, the ice level will be strengthened and the melting process will slow down.
Despite the charm of the project, some experts warn that over -human intervention in the pole environment can have unexpected consequences; Including the over -increase of ice that may remove penguins from their free water and food sources. This issue is reminiscent of an important fact; In the fight against climate change, sometimes “less interference” can have a better result.
