Varanasi, one of the most sacred cities in India, has long been known by religious rituals, the shores of the Ganges and the magnificent temples. The city, dubbed the Hinduism beliefs, a land belonging to the “God of Shiva”, hosts unique inhabitants; Cows that live freely with people and are an integral part of the city’s culture and spirituality.
The Indian photographer, Superiyo R Sarkar, has attempted to portray the role of these sacred cows in the daily lives of the people in his photography project, “Coalition”. These animals are seen not only in the streets, but also in homes, markets, and even in bodies. They roam the city without any restrictions, and people treat them with respect and kindness.
According to Hindus, cows are visualized by Nandi, a loyal compound of Shiva, and therefore have a special sanctity. Their presence in this city is not limited to a cultural reality; Rather, it represents a long -standing coexistence between humans and the animal that is less common in the world.
Black and white images of work with dramatic lighting and influential compositions reflect the deep sense of communication with these creatures. This project is not only a documentary of an ancient tradition, but also a beautiful manifestation of human and nature interaction in one of the most mysterious cities in the world.
