Maimand rock village in Kerman has been inhabited by humans for more than 3,000 years and has been registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In the southeast of Kerman province, near the city of Babak, there is a village called Maimand with amazing rock architecture. This village, which was apparently one of the first settlements of humans in the Iranian plateau, is more than 12,000 years old. In fact, Maimand is considered one of the oldest villages in the world, where 10,000-year-old stone carvings and 6,000-year-old pottery have been discovered. Its age and importance caused it to be registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 13, 2014.
There are more than 300 houses-caves in Maimand, which were dug manually on the slopes of the hills. These houses have been inhabited by local people since 3,000 years ago and are still in use today. Can you believe that in the 21st century, in the age of skyscrapers and electric cars, some people still live in a completely natural habitat in the heart of the rocks?
