In the latest development in the field of artificial intelligence and visual media, the company Perplexity AI with Getty Images has signed a multi-year contract to use the company’s extensive image archive.
The partnership will reportedly give Perplexity users access to a vast collection of stock images and Getty content. Leveraging Getty’s API, Perplexity will integrate the company’s images into search and content discovery tools on its AI platform, and accurate and legal attribution of images is a central part of the deal.

According to a Getty press release, Perplexity will make improvements to image display, including providing an image reference with the original link so users clearly know how they can legally use licensed images. This action takes place while with the spread of productive artificial intelligence tools, complex issues related to copyright and linking have caused numerous complaints against Perplexity.
In August, two Japanese media groups, Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun, sued the company for allegedly illegally copying and storing content from articles and providing false information. Also, Reddit has recently sued Perplexity for collecting data without legal permission, and even dictionaries have taken legal action against the company for their content.
Perplexity and Getty’s partnership, which has been negotiated for more than a year, is part of a partnership program with publishers, and gives official legitimacy to the startup’s use of Getty stock images. This contract is not a traditional fixed-amount agreement, as Perplexity does not train its own base models, but it will help improve the display of images and accurate referencing with links to the original source in search results.
Nick Unsworth, Getty’s vice president of strategic development, said of the deal:
“Collaborations like these help AI platforms increase the quality and accuracy of information provided to users and create a trusted and engaging experience.”
Jessica Chan, director of content at Perplexity, added:
“In the era of artificial intelligence, providing accurate referencing for information and transparency in sources is the foundation for properly understanding the world. In collaboration with Getty, users can find answers using effective visual narration and always be aware of the origin and creator of the content used.”
