Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, announced that the company plans to double the capacity of its data centers within the next 2 years.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the CEO of Microsoft announced this news to investors during the company’s quarterly financial report. In the same meeting, Nadella also announced that Microsoft wants to increase its artificial intelligence processing power by more than 80% this year.
The capacity of Microsoft’s data centers is doubled
According to Microsoft’s financial report published yesterday, the company’s revenue in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 has reached 77.7 billion dollars, which shows an 18% increase compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, the company’s operating profit reached 38 billion dollars, which is 24% more than the same period last year.
Details from Microsoft’s financial report show that most companies running AI-based applications are still not making significant profits, but some companies are still making significant profits.
In fact, the boom in artificial intelligence has been very profitable for giants like Microsoft; Because today, almost all companies are looking to create a business focused on artificial intelligence and they need cloud infrastructure to make this technology work. Other tech giants, such as Google and Amazon, have made considerable money by providing cloud infrastructure services to AI companies.
If Microsoft is making significant revenue from its Azure service, it’s no surprise that it wants to expand it. Azure now has 400 data centers in 70 different regions around the world.
Microsoft was previously the exclusive provider of cloud services to OpenAI, but that privilege was lost last January, and OpenAI sought to diversify its cloud relationships. OpenAI is now looking to build dedicated data centers with capacities of more than 10 gigawatts in different regions of America.
