Cameo is suing OpenAI over a feature called Cameo in its Sora app, accusing the AI company of directly competing with Cameo’s personalized video service by using the name.
According to The Verge, Cameo argued in a lawsuit filed in California federal court that OpenAI’s use of the word Cameo “is highly likely to weaken and tarnish the Cameo brand,” as it may lead consumers to believe that the brand is associated with “artificial, rushed, low-quality artificial intelligence content and deepfake celebrity faces.”
Cameo says the brand’s reputation is at risk
The Cameo app was launched in 2017 and allows users to pay to receive customized short videos or live video calls from celebrities, influencers and celebrities.
OpenAI’s Sora video maker artificial intelligence application, which was launched on September 30 this year, has a feature called Cameo that allows users to deepfake faces to use in videos. Although some celebrities have voluntarily uploaded their image to the Cameo feature of the Sora app, weak protection mechanisms have also led to the creation of non-consensual deepfakes.
Steven Galanis, CEO of Cameo, said about the lawsuit: “We do not take legal action lightly. We tried to resolve this amicably with OpenAI, but they refused to stop using the Cameo name on Sora. “To protect our fans, artists and the integrity of our market, we unfortunately felt we had no choice but to file this lawsuit.”
Cameo claims that OpenAI deliberately chose the Cameo name for the Sora app’s functionality to exploit the credibility and real-life interactions between celebrities and their fans that Cameo has created since its inception. Cameo is demanding financial compensation and the renaming of the feature in question in the Sora app.
