Guillermo del Toro, one of the famous Hollywood directors and Oscar winner, said in a strange comment that he would rather die than use artificial intelligence in his films.
According to NPR, this well-known Hollywood director has also joined the group of critics of using artificial intelligence in movies. In his latest interview, he talks about a range of sensitive and controversial topics, including immigration detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Los Angeles and artificial intelligence.
The use of artificial intelligence in the film industry is increasing
Explaining his views on artificial intelligence, Del Toro said he was more concerned about “natural stupidity” than “artificial intelligence”. The Hollywood director also likened the ardent supporters of artificial intelligence to the boldness and ambition of Victor Frankenstein.
But perhaps Del Toro’s most controversial point of view is about generative artificial intelligence and its use in cinematic works. Del Toro went on to talk about AI, explaining that his hatred is primarily directed at generative AI, a type of machine learning model that Del Toro has no interest in and never will.
“I’m 61 years old, and hopefully for the rest of my life I won’t have the slightest interest in using it,” he added. A few days ago, someone wrote me an email and asked: What is your position on artificial intelligence? And my answer was very short. I said: I prefer to die.
But the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking also has supporters. James Cameron, the director of films such as Avatar, Terminator and Titanic, has said in a statement that he will use artificial intelligence in his films and even suggested that the actors of the cinema industry master this technology. Cameron has also joined the board of AI startup Stability AI.
The use of artificial intelligence in the production of cinematic works has increased in recent years, and even Netflix has announced that it will invest more in this technology. Netflix even said this year that it used artificial intelligence to create some scenes in its movies.
