In May this year, Openai announced that the startup had bought Johnny Io’s design with a $ 1.5 billion contract. As part of the agreement, Apple’s legendary designer joined Openai to develop artificial intelligence -based products.
The move shows that Openai is intentional to enter the hardware market, and hiring a former Apple design chief is its first major step. According to the new report by The Information, Openai has increased its hardware activities by attracting more talent than Apple.
Openai is attracting Apple engineers to make artificial intelligence hardware products
OpenAI is said to have offered legal packages worth more than a million dollars to Apple’s hardware staff. Other benefits such as less bureaucracy, stronger collaboration, and the ability to work on larger projects are among the things Openai use to encourage Apple employees.
Of course, this interest was apparently unilateral, as some Apple employees have come to OpenAI and have been working on the company. These employees are said to be interested in collaborating with former Apple’s legendary designer Johnny Ivo.
Openai has so far been very successful in attracting some of Apple’s best hardware engineers. Tang Tan, the head of Apple’s product design, has joined the ChatGPT manufacturer with Johnny Io. Tang has worked in Apple for about 5 years and has played a key role in the development of products such as the iPhone. Cyrus Daniel Irani, Apple’s interface design manager, and Apple Watch’s senior designer Eric De Jong, are other talents that have joined Openai.
It has been reported that Apple is aware of its engineers by Openai and has even canceled its annual meeting in China to keep its employees away from communicating with the company.
But Openai has not limited its efforts to attracting the best Apple engineers and has even gone to Apple’s supply partners in China. Openai is said to be working on products such as smart speakers, glasses, digital sound recorders and a wearable pin. Luxshare and Gortek, two suppliers of Apple in China, are responsible for the production of OpenAI hardware.
