OpenAI has recently released new documents that respond to Elon Musk’s complaint; These documents indicate that Elon Musk initially supported changing the structure of this organization to a profitable model.
Elon Musk is one of the founders of OpenAI; Earlier in August, he filed a complaint alleging that the organization deviated from its non-profit principles.
In the latest documents uncovered by OpenAI, Musk pointed to emails from 2015 in which he suggested a “standard corporate with a parallel nonprofit” structure would be more appropriate for the project, an indication of his early support for organizational flexibility.
It was in 2017 that Elon Musk raised the issue of changing to a profitable model; Elon Musk had claimed that year that the non-profit structure could not meet the financial and technological needs of OpenAI.
In the same years, Musk was trying to have full control over the new proposed entity; This complete control included the acquisition of the majority of shares and the chairmanship of the board of directors and the executive director, which faced strong opposition from OpenAI managers, including Sam Altman; These differences eventually led to Musk’s departure from the board in 2018.
Finally, in 2019, OpenAI officially announced that it would continue with a limited-profit model with oversight by a non-profit entity to raise the capital it needs to compete in the AI industry.
Elon Musk was offered to be a shareholder in this model, but their request was rejected by Elon Musk; In response to this request, he said that there is no financial interest in OpenAI’s profitable activities.
Now, Elon Musk has appeared in the market with xAI as a competitor to OpenAI, and Sam Altman’s competition with Elon Musk has now turned into a fight over the future of artificial intelligence and domination of this industry.
