After Elon Musk, Meta is the latest opponent of turning OpenAI into a for-profit company. In a letter to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, the company has asked to stop the process of converting OpenAI from a non-profit to a for-profit entity.
OpenAI, the maker of the ChatGPT chatbot, was founded in 2015 as a non-profit foundation. But “Sam Altman”, the CEO of OpenAI, has recently requested to change the company’s status from non-profit to for-profit. This request was initially met with strong opposition from Elon Musk, one of the co-founders of OpenAI. But OpenAI recently leaked emails that show Musk has been in favor of making the company profitable in the past.
Meta says OpenAI should not convert from a non-profit to a for-profit company
But Meta has also apparently joined the jirga of opponents of OpenAI’s commercialization. According to the Wall Street Journal, in a recent letter to the California Attorney General, the company told the California Attorney General that OpenAI should not be allowed to break the law by taking the assets it built as a non-profit and use them for potentially large private gains. .
But one of the notable points of this letter is Meta’s support for Elon Musk’s recent stance on the commercialization of OpenAI. Metta mentioned in his letter that Musk is well qualified and well placed to represent the interests of Californians in this matter.
In response to Meta’s letter, OpenAI CEO Brett Taylor said the company is focused on advancing its mission to benefit humanity with artificial general intelligence (AGI) by fulfilling its fiduciary obligations. Also, Brett Taylor further mentioned that any possible restructuring can ensure that the non-profit OpenAI Foundation will continue to grow and will have a higher ability to pursue its missions.
Sam Altman recently said that OpenAI should shed its non-profit structure to become a more attractive option for investors.
Of course, Meta also pursues its interests in preventing OpenAI from becoming a for-profit company. Mark Zuckerberg is determined to make Meta AI the world’s most used AI assistant, a title currently held by ChatGPT.
