For the first time, people will be able to talk to an older version of themselves about their lives and dreams using an artificial intelligence with a simulated avatar of their future face. This artificial intelligence is called Future You.
The Future You project, created by MIT Media Lab researchers and other international partners, uses artificial intelligence to simulate a user in their 60s and 70s. They detailed the project in an article on the arXiv database.
Users can talk about topics such as how to achieve what they want in life, their beliefs, and their views through an AI-powered text interface. The scientists of this project say that such a system was invented to give people the feeling that they are connected to their future.
Hal Hershfield, one of the study’s authors and a professor of behavioral decision-making and psychology at UCLA, said being able to get advice from your older self instead of a generic AI chatbot makes you feel better about the future. He said in a statement:
“Vivid and interactive components of an AI platform give the user a point of connection, preventing what can lead to intellectual anxiety and (instead) making the interaction more tangible and productive.”
How Future You artificial intelligence works
The first component of Future You is an image generation model called StyleClip. After the user uploads a selfie of their face, the system uses aging models to predict what the user will look like at age 60, adding aging components such as wrinkles and gray hair.
The training data for the Future You service is obtained from the information that the user provides during questioning and answering about topics such as his current life situation, his goals and concerns for the future.
These responses are received by GPT version 3.5 of the ChatGPT service and create a structure that the researchers call “future memory.” According to this information, the Future You service combines predictions about the user’s future based on data received from other people’s life experiences and guesses the user’s future.
