Samsung’s augmented reality headset called the Galaxy XR has finally been unveiled. This device is a direct competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro, but it costs less. Samsung did not produce its new headset alone and has collaborated with Google and Qualcomm in this field.
design
The Galaxy XR looks similar to Apple’s Vision Pro headset, but with some notable differences. The top of the headset is slightly raised, which makes it easier to use for longer periods of time. This device, like its competitor, has an external battery that is connected through a cable. However, the said headset weighs less than Apple’s Vision Pro. Samsung Galaxy XR weighs only 545 grams compared to more than 600 grams of Apple product.
Also, the weight of M5 Vision Pro, which has just been released, is 750 grams. The Korean mixed reality headset has a touch screen on the right side for easy user interface control. There are also buttons to adjust the volume or use Gemini. The device comes with a headband that fits around your head and has a graduated dial to adjust its size. Also, Samsung has used 19 sensors in its new product. All in all, the Galaxy XR looks good among other mixed reality headsets.
Specifications
The Galaxy XR headset uses the latest Qualcomm XR2 Plus 2nd generation chip with the ability to render 4K images for each eye. This product has two Micro-OLED displays with a resolution of 3552 x 3840, which Samsung claims can display 27 million pixels, while Apple’s Vision Pro has 23 million pixels. The new Korean headset also has a smaller pixel pitch, resulting in a higher pixel density than its Cupertino rival. Although the maximum refresh rate of the Galaxy XR is 90 Hz, this rate reaches 120 Hz on the Vision Pro M5. The Samsung headset supports videos with maximum 8K HDR quality and displays clear and vivid images.
Features
Samsung’s mixed reality headset uses Android XR developed by Google. This platform allows you to run Android apps on it. Additionally, users can watch sports matches, play virtual reality games or edit videos on their headset. Galaxy XR comes with Gemini AI and features like Circle to Search. That way, you can circle any real object in the real world and ask Gemina to provide information about it. You will also be able to use Google Maps on the headset to view routes and directions. It goes without saying that it is possible to add depth to videos and two-dimensional photos through Google Photos.
battery
The external battery of the Galaxy XR weighs 302 grams, which, according to Samsung, can charge up to an hour for normal use and 2.5 hours for video playback. Of course, this amount is slightly less than 2.5 hours of normal use or 3 hours of video playback on Apple’s Vision Pro. You can also use both of these headsets while charging.
price
The Galaxy XR headset costs $1,799 in the US. This device is only available in a 256 GB version. On the other hand, Apple’s Vision Pro is sold in the US at a price of $3,499 and 256 GB of memory. The 1 TB version of this product costs $3,899.
