The remarkable success of the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max phone in the Chinese market has encouraged Xiaomi to continue designing phones equipped with a secondary display on the back of the device. With innovation in design, this brand was able to attract the attention of users and record a new sales record in a year when the supply of different phones has become very difficult.
Xiaomi 17 Pro Max (Xiaomi 17 Pro Max) was sold so well that now Xiaomi has confidently announced that it will continue to produce phones with a rear screen. Launching a truly different phone in 2025 (1404) is challenging, but Xiaomi managed to overcome this challenge by introducing two models, Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, which are equipped with a secondary display on the back of the device, and now it seems that this decision has been completely successful.
During a live broadcast on the Weibo social network, Xiaomi CEO Lu Weibing announced that the company will continue to use dynamic back displays in its future flagship phones. He also said that Xiaomi plans to increase investment in research and development to improve the quality of these displays in the next generation of phones.
This decision is based on the success of the Xiaomi 17 series, which the company says has been a huge success with a 20% increase in sales compared to last year. In the meantime, the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max model has been the most successful and has broken the domestic sales record on the first day of release.
What is the use of the back screen?
Currently, the Xiaomi 17 series is only available in the Chinese market. Unlike Apple’s iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro Max, the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max phones use a so-called “camera platform” design on which the secondary display is placed.
This OLED display has a size of 2.66 inches, a resolution of 904 x 572 pixels, a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and a brightness of 3500 nits. Similar to the cover displays of modern foldable phones, this display supports personalized wallpaper, multiple widgets, selfie viewfinder and several other features.
According to Xiaomi’s recent announcement, we are likely to see a larger rear display with more features in the upcoming Xiaomi 18 series. Lu Weibing said that the company is working on updates for the current generation displays, one of which will be the possibility of simultaneous translation.
No other smartphone in the market has a similar display on the back of the device. Only the Nothing Phone (3) features a dedicated Glyph Matrix display on the back, which can be used for a few small games and limited features.
Sticking to a distinctive feature
One of the common pitfalls with features like Xiaomi’s rear display is that they’re often only tried once, and companies don’t stick with them long enough to mature. Many brands try creative ideas and give up too soon. For this reason, Xiaomi’s commitment to continue the path of the rear display is admirable.
It may not be possible to say for sure how useful this feature will be, but at least now we know that there is a future for it.
