Apple has yet to introduce a foldable iPhone, but Samsung has done so for 5 years and is gearing up to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
Google recently introduced the Pixel Fold and Motorola has made a good effort in this field with the Motorola Razr+. Apple usually likes to research the market well before its entry, and this may have caused the delay in introducing a foldable iPhone.
The research firm IDC has predicted that the sales of foldable phones will reach 21.4 million units in 2023, which represents a growth of 50%. We’ve heard rumors of a foldable iPhone so far, but most reports point to a 2024 or 2025 launch date. We asked three well-known analysts about their thoughts on Apple’s attempt to make a foldable iPhone.
Nabila Popal, IDC: The foldable phone segment is not a temporary trend. According to IDC’s latest forecast, we expect this segment to grow in the long term, with or without Apple. But if Apple enters this field, there will be a huge growth in this sector and the penetration of foldable phones will increase greatly.
Avi Greengart, Techsponential: Flip phones are now the perfect form factor for everyone but Apple users. Apple will wait until the volume of sales of these phones is low, but after stabilizing the demand, it will probably enter this market.
Carolina Milanesi, Creative Strategies: I’m not sure Apple will introduce a foldable iPhone anytime soon. Apple might want to make a foldable iPad before a foldable iPhone. So it is still too early for Apple to change the iPhone Pro Max to a foldable design.
